The dictatorship of the instant governs our era, devouring the sacred space of waiting in a frenzy that inexorably levels every nuance, every complex thought. We are now accustomed to everything immediately, incapable of pausing before that which requires breath to reveal itself, forgetting that the works destined to last are measured precisely by their intrinsic ability to cross and dominate time. There is, however, a silent and stubborn rebellion taking place far from the urban spotlights, in those marginal places where the clock necessarily yields to the inscrutable rhythm of the seasons, to the toil of the earth, and to the stubbornness of changing matter.
In this harsh and luminous strip of Calabria, wedged between the shifting vastness of the Ionian Sea and the cold heights of the Sila, the ‘A Vita agricultural estate represents a formidable bulwark of this temporal resistance. Founded in 2008 in Cirò Marina by Francesco Maria De Franco and Laura Violino, the winery spans 8 hectares of vineyards cultivated in strict organic farming, an ecosystem where the vine dialogues with wild herbs and insects. The company’s technical vision firmly rejects any chemical or mechanical compromise, embracing a philosophy based on spontaneous fermentations, extreme macerations, and the total absence of filtration, with the precise and unequivocal intent of restoring voice and dignity to a terroir silenced and trivialized by purely industrial production logics for too long.
It is within the Cirò Wine Fest, on August 7, 2026, that this vocation for authenticity found its highest and most touching expression, thanks to a vertical tasting masterfully guided by Nicola Zurlo and rhythmically accompanied by evocative readings from La Marchesina by Saverio Strati. The liquid narrative unfolded exclusively through the winery’s magnums, starting from the fundamental assumption that here rosato is not conceived as a commercial afterthought or a byproduct, but rather as an absolute cru, obtained with a carefully considered night of maceration. The 2021 Rosato, born from a rainy month of August and an unusually tranquil harvest, announces itself with a persuasive amber mantle with mahogany reflections, introducing a nose where the briny entry, recalling salted caramel and candied citrus, elegantly turns toward ripe plum and red fig. On the palate, the peculiar sapidity and the dense tannic texture of Gaglioppo trace a fresh, warm, vibrant profile that is still fully evolving. The 2018 iteration, a vintage in which the providential rains of the last week of August stabilized temperatures at 28 degrees, shows the same chromatic appearance but boasts a distinctly superior phenolic charge, where candied orange blends with hypnotic notes of licorice and withered flowers, closing in a full sip of masterful persistence. The transition to reds takes place by exploring the depths of the reserve, the result of extremely long macerations, released onto the market after at least 4 years and reserved exclusively for the north-west facing vineyard portions, the only ones capable of taming the impetus of the tannins in specific years. The 2018 Rosso, after 3 audacious weeks of experimental skin contact, shines with a pale, lively ruby tending toward garnet, exhibiting a dense nose of red fruit jam, cloves, balsamic suggestions, and finely smoked traits on an austere, sapid, and exhaustingly long sip. The 2016, marked by a dramatic dichotomy between summer drought and September downpours that complicated alcohol extraction, raises the anthocyanin charge and throws open the doors of tertiary evolution, offering cherry, morello cherry, fine leather, tobacco, cocoa, and almond, supported by a tenacious, fresh palate with immense persistence, now fully harmonious. But it is the formidable 2014 that stops time, sculpted by a rare rainy spring followed by an exceptional absence of summer heat, which allowed the inclusion of grapes from the Sant’Anastasia vineyard. The glass, now oriented toward garnet and luminous mahogany, explodes in a kaleidoscope of withered flowers, brandied fruit, cigar, leather, and carob, delivering a warm, infinitely long drink, in which every component has found its sublime and definitive pacification.
This progression is not merely an exhibition of technical skill, but stands as a declaration of intent that dismantles the reassuring and standardized contemporary enological canons. The labels of this winery are not built to please distracted palates, but shape liquid witnesses that demand rigor, attention, and intellectual curiosity, revealing the unexplored greatness of Cirò only to those who accept to measure themselves against the uncompromising grammar of patience.
